If you want to master the katana, then you should know what it is, what kind of martial art you need to learn and what steps you need to take to successfully master the sword.

The Art of Swordsmanship

The oldest schools teaching the art of using the katana sword appeared in Japan in the 15th and 16th centuries.

The main idea of this art and the techniques based on it is that the longitudinal part of the sword should go along its plane, and not at right angles. In this way, cutting blows are applied, not stabbing. Therefore, it is more correct to call it not blows, but cuts.

Katana is used in several types of martial arts. Kenjutsu is the art of swordsmanship. Kendo is a sport with fixed rules of attack. In martial arts schools, classes are held using bamboo swords, so it is also mandatory to wear protective armour.

If you go to study in Japan, you will still be able to meet traditional fencing schools, despite the emperor’s general ban on carrying swords.

Steps for mastering the art

  1. Choose an art form

Before you start the lessons, you need to decide on the type of martial art. You can study the information, or you can go to trial lessons on each art you are interested in. This is important to do, since each view has its own style.

  1. Collect the necessary equipment

Depending on what kind of art you choose, this will be the necessary equipment. There are several types of weapons: katana, shinai, bokken. They differ in the length of the sword.

You also need to take care of special clothes for classes and the cleanliness of your equipment, for example, buy a katana cleaning kit. Such kits contain everything you need.

  1. Study the books

After you have chosen a type of martial art and collected equipment, you can begin to deepen the study of this topic and conduct research. In addition, you should explore the available training options with Sensei. It is not recommended to study the art of swordsmanship on your own, even though there are enough resources for this right now. You can destroy the basics of martial art and then it will be hard to retrain.

  1. Therefore, the next step is to find a suitable sensei for you, who will become a real mentor for you in this matter.
  2. Be sure to train. Not only at school, but also at home after classes, repeat everything you have learned. As in any business, the main thing is consistency and practice. Then you will quickly master the basics and be able to improve your skills.
